Abstract

Teacher education is the policies and procedures designed to equip prospective teachers with knowledge, attitudes, behaviours and skills they require to perform their tasks effectively in the classroom, schools and wider community. This paper focused on teacher education and sustainable development in Nigeria. It highlighted teacher education as well as goals and nature of teacher education. It stressed the concept of sustainable development. It further looked at teacher education for sustainable development as well as emergent trends in teacher education for sustainable development in Nigeria, its problems and way out. The paper suggested among others that professional development programmes should be organized for pre-service and in-service for teachers to enable them upgrade and upgrade their knowledge and skills towards sustainable development; teacher educators and students should be encouraged to improvise from their localities to enable them to be creative, innovative and resourceful.
