Abstract

In a developing economy education plays vital roles in overall national development. When the expected development outcomes are not realistically achieved there would be need for reengineering the education system because it is through the instrument of education that meaningful and sustainable development is achieved. Guidance and counselling is an important educational service that is highly important for effective functioning of the education system even in developed countries of the world. This paper discusses the concept, the need, objectives and constraints to effective counselling. It further suggests that although guidance and counselling has been established in Nigerian secondary schools, there is an urgent need for reengineering guidance and counselling by restructuring guidance and counselling training curriculum, establishing guidance and counselling at all levels of the education system, admission of counselling trainees based on aptitude and interests, employing more counsellors to schools and establishment of counselling allowance for practicing counsellors. This will go a long way towards sustainable educational development for sustainable national development in Nigeria.
