REVISION OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL CHEMISTRY CURRICULUM FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN TEACHER EDUCATION

Abstract
This paper investigated the revision of Senior Secondary School Chemistry curriculum for sustainable development in teacher education. Three research questions were used for the study. A descriptive survey design was also used. The sample consisted of fifty – six chemistry teachers selected from public secondary schools in Nsukka and Obollo- Afor Education Zones of Enugu State. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data. This had a reliability of 0.86 using Cronbach Alpha Technique. Mean and Standard deviation were used to answer the research questions. Results obtained revealed that there are too many topics in the chemistry curriculum, teachers use inappropriate instructional strategies to teach chemistry. Most of the chemistry teachers lack the practical skill needed for sustainable development in chemistry teaching, among others. It was recommended that teachers should be trained and retrained with modern innovative teaching strategies. Also, the contents of the chemistry curriculum should be reduced and there should be school – industry links. This will help attain teacher education, for sustainable development.
