Abstract

The study investigated the roles of counselling in re-engineering the Nigerian education system for sustainable development in Kano State as perceived by the schools’ counsellors. The design for the study is a descriptive survey. The population was made up of all the counsellors in Kano State senior secondary schools numbering 510. Occasional sampling technique was used to select the sample of 310 counsellors. Researchers-designed questionnaire with Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient of 0.83 was used for data collection. One research question was raised and analysed using descriptive statistics. Results of the analysis revealed that all the items on the questionnaire, with exception of two, were perceived as the roles of counselling in re-engineering the Nigerian educational system for sustainable development in Kano State. Based on the findings, it is concluded that the role of counselling in re-engineering our educational system, should include enhancing individual’s competency skills, assisting students in setting realistic goals, improving the self image of students in broaden their occupational ambition, and monitoring individuals’ transition from school to work, to mention but a few. It is, therefore, recommended among others that the bill to the National Assembly sponsored by the Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON) should be given necessary attention, so that the legislation be put in place for counselling and counsellors in Nigeria. Similarly, the National Policy on Education should clearly emphasise the role of counselling in our tertiary institutions.
