Abstract

Education is the proximate determinant of the level of development of any nation and a change in the nations development calls for the adjustment in the nation’s curriculum development and implementation. This is certain when concern about quality is uppermost in education which can enhance national and sustainable development. This is also very understandable given the dynamic changes in the society and the innovations in education and the curriculum and the glowing importance of curriculum to national and sustainable development. The issue now is that students shy away from the study of basic science as observed by the researcher. This negative attitude in return brought about poor performance of students in basic science. This paper therefore discussed ways of improving the teaching of basic science curriculum to promote sustainable development. The paper placed emphasis on the use of information and communication technology, training of basic science teachers, provision of basic science instructional materials, use of interactive methods of teaching, inclusion of entrepreneurial basic science and allocating more time to basic sciences among others as ways to improve basic science curriculum for sustainable development. Finally, recommendations were made on proper improvement in the teaching of basic science curriculum to enhance sustainable development. This include among other things that all basic science teachers should be made to register with the  Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), so as to gain from their conferences, seminars, workshops, and interactive sessions and the use of interactive method of teaching which will help them change their teaching strategies in order to promote education for sustainable development.
