Abstract

The study examined the extent of adoption of scientific supervisory techniques in the instructional process of the universal basic education in Imo State. The descriptive survey design was adopted. Three hundred and twenty five (325) respondents out of a population of one thousand three hundred and fifty constituted the study sample. A structured questionnaire was used to elicit responses from the respondents. The validity and reliability of the instrument were ascertained. Data were collated using  percentages to determine the level of application of the identified techniques of supervision in the schools. The major findings include; that seven out of the ten modern techniques of supervision were not effectively used in the schools. That the pattern of supervision in the schools was mainly delegating to subordinates and classroom visitation. There are urgent need for series of seminars, short term courses and workshop for the school heads and other supervisors on the modern techniques of supervision; Supervisors should avoid over dependence on classroom visitation and explore other techniques of supervision. Government and non Government organizations to improve on the provision of logistics such as transport requirements for effective supervision; Priority should be created for school supervision by creating more time for supervisors; Supervisor-Teacher ratio in schools should be re-appraised with a view to improving supervision.
