Abstract

The major purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of family upbringing on senior secondary students’ academic achievement on Igbo language. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The study population consists of one hundred and sixty(160) senior secondary school students randomly selected from government co- educational government schools within each  of the eight (8) schools selected for the study in Nsukka education zone of Enugu state. A researcher constructed 30- item questionnaire on family upbringing and academic achievement (FUSAILQ) with achievement test which was the instrument for data collection. These items were face validated by three experts in the Department of Language Education and Measurement and Evaluation unit, University of Nigeria Nsukka .The instrument was trial tested on thirty (30) students from Community secondary school, Neke Isi-uzo Local Government Area, Enugu State. Data obtained were used to calculate the reliability of the instrument using Crombach Alpha based formula and the reliability coefficient of 0.8 was considered significant. Results were analyzed using mean, t- test and Leven’s Test for Equality of Variance at 0.05 level of significance. The study used expo-facto design with a reliability coefficient of 0.78. The results of the study show that parental motivation, child/ parent interaction and parental regard for the Igbo language as an indigenous language, has major influence on students’ achievement on Igbo language in the study area. Based on the findings, it is recommended amongs others that capacity building through mentoring, peer collaboration is a strategy for students engagement. Workshops and seminars should be organized for secondary schools where parents, students and teachers should learn the importance of Language especially the indigenous language in human development. This will improve the family value and the upbringing. This will significantly enhance Students Academic Achievement and general development.
