Abstract

The main purpose of this study was designed to develop and validate an instrument titled “Teacher Work Performance Assessment Scale (TWPAS)” for sustainable development in universities in Imo State. The study adopted an instrumentation research design. Thus, the population of the study comprised all the lecturers in the three universities in Imo State of Nigeria. The universities include Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State (Federal), Abia State University, Uturu Abia State (State) and Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State (Private). The sample of the study comprised 60 lecturers purposively selected from Faculty of Education in the three Universities. Twenty (20) lecturers were selected from each of the Universities of the Faculty of Education. Four research questions were formulated for this study. The instrument used in this study is a rating scale titled “Teacher Work Performance Assessment Scale (TWPAS)”. The initial draft copy of TWPAS has sixty-nine items. The instrument was duly face validated by three specialists in the area of measurement and evaluation. Their comments and suggestions were then incorporated in a second draft of the instrument still consisting of 79 items. This was subjected to field trial using sixty lecturers drawn from three Universities in Imo State. The data from the field trail were subjected to factor analysis to determine the items that were valid and therefore qualified to be included in the instrument for use in the actual study. Based on the factor analysis, 70 items were found to be factorally pure. The remaining 70 items were grouped into 14 clusters. The test of reliability using the 70 items that survived the validation test revealed that the instrument is reliable. The researchers therefore recommend that the TWPAS be used by the management of faculties’ of education and all the categories of tertiary institutions for sustainable development.
